Kazakhstan is located in the north of the Central Asian republics. Russia borders it to the north, China to the east, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan to the south, the Caspian Sea, and part of Turkmenistan to the west. It has almost 1894 kilometers of coastline in the Caspian Sea. Kazakhstan is about four times larger than Texas. The soil is mainly steppes with hilly plains and plateaus.
The native Kazakhs were nomadic Turks belonging to various parts of the hordes of Kazakhstan. They gathered in settlements and lived in tent-shaped tents made of felt called yurts. Their tribes migrated seasonally to find pastures for sheep, horses, and goats flocks. Although they had leaders, the Kazakhs seldom united as a single nation under one great leader. Their tribes fell to the Mongols in the 13th century and were ruled by the Tartar khanates until Russia conquered the area in the 18th century.
The region became part of the Autonomous Republic of Kyrgyzstan formed by the Soviet authorities in 1920, and in 1925 the name of this entity was changed to the Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic of Kazakhstan (Kazakhstan ASSR). After 1927, the Soviet government forced the Kazakh nomads to settle on collective and state farms. The Soviets continued the tsarist policy of encouraging giant Russians and other Slavs to settle in the area.
